Evening haunts in Beijing

Highly recommend a couple of nights out in Beijing hanging out in Houhai - an are at the back of the large lake near the Emperial Palace. If you've got cash to burn, head to the upmarket Lotus Markets. The bars are beautiful and tasteful, and usually have a live band, but beers are at four or five times the price because its so frequently patronized by western business people. For indy types you can head around the opposite side of the lake for some chilled grungier type bars with live music and cozy couches for a 20yuan Mojito. My tip is to get a 3 yuan beer at a convenience store, usually the pubs will want your business enough to let you take it in. There aren't many threatening looking bouncers or soldier types hanging around, which is even better. Its Moon Festival time, and there are plenty of lanterns and “sky lights” around –theres an air of optimism here and Chinese people are much more relaxed in the dark– love it!
